I like to think of this work as human origami: there is an art to figuring out what things to unfold or release in order to help the body take on a new shape.
A single session can be helpful, however, significantly greater change can be realized through a well-planned series of sessions. This work is cumulative: we build momentum through a series of sessions to create lasting change, which will help you to continue feeling more comfortable and agile long after your series ends.
Three keys to obtaining lasting structural change are strategy, patience, and curiosity. We won’t try to change everything at once, and we won’t necessarily concentrate on the area where you think the problem resides. In each session, there will be time for you to explore movement in areas that have just been worked. (These areas may have “forgotten” how to move well, and thoughtful experimentation can help you to reset your automatic movement patterns, awakening those areas to their new potential.) Throughout your series, I will help you to cultivate curiosity, which will take a lot of the stress out of change and can make the whole experience actually quite fun and engaging.
Your unique needs which will determine how many sessions are recommended.
Here are four possible pathways to change:
“Classic” Structural Integration Series (twelve sessions)
If you have a long-standing pattern of compensation, from multiple injuries both big and small, you may want to embark on a classic KMI twelve-session series (developed out of the original Rolfing® ten-session series). This longer journey will allow your body the time necessary to make a more significant shift, returning you gradually to a state of greater mobility, freedom, and smooth coordination. The classic twelve-session series truly offers an experience of transformation and rejuvenation, and is simply wonderful if you want to build a new relationship with your body.
Tune-up Series (three sessions)
Sometimes it takes just a few Structural Integration sessions for you to feel a big change. A three-session series might be all you need to get things running smoothly again, because a little work, well-targeted, goes a long way.
Injury Recovery Series (six sessions)
If you have an injury, we might need to plan for a few more sessions. A six-session series, will allow us time for specific attention to the injured area and re-integration of that region with the rest of your structure.
Chronic Pain Reduction Series (six sessions)
People living with chronic pain, who may have sensitive systems (for example, people diagnosed with MS or fibromyalgia), might also benefit from a longer series of sessions. But in this case, we will titrate the work more slowly into your system, so as not to “rock the boat.” After your initial session, we can plan 5 more sessions. This series should provide enough gradual change to your system that you will feel significantly better. By the end of your six-session series, we will also know whether you would benefit from more work, and we could make a new plan from there.
